There's a lot of "talk" online about deaing with anxiety, panic, and phobias. So how can you sort through it all to find out what might work for you?
Well, here's the first place to start. The difference between anxiety and a phobia, let's say, is the element of time. This is a very important difference, as we'll outline.
For starters, a phobia has it's roots in the past. Some event, let's say, that caused the state of fear. And this event sort of "anchors" the fear there to the surroundings or context so that, in the future, similar circumstances bring the state back as if that one moment is getting replayed again and again.
Anxiety involves fear of what might happen in the future. Anyone who has experienced this (myself included) know that it's like the "dreaded" outcome is playing out live, right now.
Think of this as envisioning the "worst case scenario" as not just possibly going to happen, but definitely going to happen. In this case, someone becomes anxious because they are fearful now of what might happen, but what will happen. So the worst case scenario as they picture it in their mind gets played out as if real, as if it is happening now or will happen if they follow a course of action.
